Massage After Care

Getting a massage can be one of the most relaxing feelings in the world (depending on the type of massage you get). However, it’s important that you always follow the massage after care instructions provided to you by your therapist once the massage has ended, in order to prolong the feeling of relaxation and wellbeing. At Mobile Massage, our therapists always recommend the following tips to our clients:

1. Drink LOTS of water

Your body just went through a particularly stressful time, in which it was being maneuvered by an external source. The lymphatic system was being drained and any fluid build up is now likely gone (hence why you usually have to pee right after a massage). Now it’s important that you rehydrate your body right after the treatment in order to avoid the onset of headaches, muscle pain, and dry skin.

2. Have an Epsom salts bath

Epsom salts is often seen in most spas and massage therapists offices as it is a great not-so-secret weapon. It works to relax the muscles and promote overall stress-relief. The Epsom salts are composed of magnesium sulfate and draw out toxins in the body.

P.S. Baths are meant to be warm, not hot hot hot! If you are suffering from any type of inflammation, this can be made worse by the excessive heat, as it promotes inflammation in the body. Warm water will help to ease the pain and inflammation.

3. Listen to your body

After your treatment has come to an end, it’s important to listen to your body. Understand how you feel, if you are relaxed, tired, energized, feeling pain or no pain, etc. Continue doing so for the next 24-48 hours consciously, and see how your body changes. See if new pain arises or if your relaxed state goes away.

4. Rest

After a massage, it is not unusual to feel lethargic. It’s often encouraged that people go home and take it easy after their treatment in order to receive the full benefits of the process. Massages will often promote a sense of relaxation and stress relief which can be transcribed by the brain as feeling tired. Don’t feel like you need to shut off this feeling and be productive; instead, just rest. Listen to your body and give it what it wants.
